We are a web development company, we provide websites for schools, only they're more a content management system, more a weblog (or blog) than an old-fashioned static website. Weblogs should be thought of as rolling news pages, diaries, journals. Used as a school's main site they keep everybody informed, usually daily, sometimes hourly even nearly live. Each school can have more than just one site, one for each class, for each sports team, pupil... A whole school could live off just one site; no limit on number of pages.
Be proud of your website, tell everybody about it! We're so confident that you'll actually enjoy updating your site and communicating you can try one for free for 30 days if you really need to! Take a look at our example school's website. Or, suss out our prices & packs.
There are sound educational reasons for using blogs in the classroom. Fancy a geography project collecting links and topics about Paris, maybe even connecting up with a few Parisians? Or, an English project for building comprehension and analysis skills? Or the art department building up a portfolio of work? Or the school Sport results? And then there's the teachers, the parents, the Governors...
Perfect. Even for a techno-phobe head teacher! Nervous staff and admin will smile.
You know the problem, nobody's qualified as a web designer in your school, nobody really wants to take responsibility, no one wants the pain of building nor maintaining your school's website.
If you have one, it possibly gives your school a poor image, it's never useful, merely being a place holder for a telephone number, an address, a contact name or some old pictures. Updating it is a skilled job, that no one enjoys.
If your school hasn't a website, likely you've seen the rest and decided to skip the idea. Who can blame you?
Well, your kids can blame you, so can the parents, so can the school governors—you're missing out on the internet revolution of citizen journalism, of participatory democracy and online conversation. Of learning, fast. At internet speed. Both founders can vouch for the changes that are made, when you're writing to the world everyday.
With a Walsall Schools website, you can really enjoy updating your site, click the 'edit this page' buttons, and type away, post new news directly to the front page, by email if you need to, do it every day, even every hour! Now, everybody will be clamouring to post updates, for the football team, for your OFSTED results, for important school events, for those holiday dates that nobody can remember. Your front page will be a river of news, always on the move with news, notices, community posts. Your internal pages will always have the right details, the up to date facts. See them, post them—in two clicks! Classes can have their own sections, pupils pages...
We're content management system designers, which means we sweat hard to make the whole experience of maintaining a site easy and we've been at it since 1999, building intranets for The Government Office for The West Midlands amongst others. Now, we want to make it easy for teachers too. No need for any geeky skills, just concentrate on your writing!
At last your community, pupils, parents, teachers, governors and ancillary staff are engaged, involved, updated and chatting, that's right, now you can gather feedback too!
Use the built-in power to post pictures, loads and loads of them, add the minutes of the parents' meeting as a 'word doc,' any type of file can be shared; gather responses to your ideas, now your school can be tapping into the power of the internet. This will blow you away—even use the aggregator to tune into other schools. Make connections, grow your community wider than you could have imagined. The in-built aggregator is one of our killer features. Tune it to listen to the hum of your news network, community and voices—efficiently! It's your newspaper on the 'net a river of new news, every day, every hour.
Don't worry, you have complete control and monitoring powers. If anybody posts something out of bounds or off-topic, you can edit the message, or delete it and even ban that member from posting again. We catch and stop lots and keep our beady technical eye on such to maintain a convivial atmosphere. Mixed with a private site, there's space for all to fool around and discover, in complete safety. Move pages to the public site when they're ready. There's not even a restriction on the number of pages (one site we look after has 147,000 pages with over 3,000 members).
Being over 6 years old, the system is deep, with many features and benefits you'll never need to know about, but plenty to learn over the years, as you and your school: pupils, staff, admin, parents, ancillaries, Governors all grow and flourish on the web.
Hundreds of thousands of people use this type of system everyday and we've been hosting thousands of people for over 6 years—we're experienced, knowledgeable and committed to our users and believe in the transforming power of this style of communication in education. We want you to enjoy the on-line experience and gain from it, a lot can happen.
